LG unveiled its Signature OLED W-Series TV at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017, this is the flagship model in its latest lineup of flat-panel TVs. The ten different models feature Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and the 77 inch LG Signature OLED TV W in particular pushes the envelope on design. Just to be clear, the photo above shows the actual TV product, not some kind of OLED panel demo…
The 77/65W7, 77/65G7, 65/55E7, 65/55C7 and 65/55B7 models make up LG’s new TV lineup. They combine the blade-slim design of LG’s B7 and C7 series and the Picture-on-Glass design of the company’s E7 and G7 series. The W7 series gets a new Picture-on-Wall design.
The Signature OLED TV W has a razor-thin profile which measures just 2.57mm thin (1/10 of an inch) on the 65 inch model. It’s so thin that it can be mounted on the wall with magnetic brackets and this eliminates any gap between the wall and the TV. The OLED display bends a little if you pull on it, it is just miraculously thin, yet with an excellent HDR image quality. HDR is currently running with Dolby Vision, but Technicolor’s HDR will soon be supported by this TV as well.
"MIRACULOUSLY THIN, YET WITH EXCELLENT HDR IMAGE QUALITY" This is made possible by moving all the non-display related electronics into the sound bar. As you can see, this saves a huge amount of internal volume in the TV design. The 60W soundbar has an excellent performance with 7 speakers/drivers and also supports Dolby Atmos, which is a 3D sound rendering system that was originally developed for movie theaters. Two large speakers oriented upwards will bounced sounds off the ceiling, which gives you a better spatial sound. The sub-woofer is integrated in the sound bar.
There’s a flat ribbon cable that goes from the soundbar to the TV, and it is flat enough to be discrete, even if you don’t make it go inside the wall, or hide it in some other way. The ribbon cable provides power and transmit all the data from the soundbar to the display element.
All LG 2017 OLED TVs use Ultra Luminance technology to provide greater brightness where required (a must-have for HDR). The W7 OLED TV uses LG’s pixel dimming control technology to render perfect blacks without any light leakage. All new OLED TVs from LG feature Active HDR with support for all platforms, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, and are also ready to support Advanced HDR by Technicolor technology. The latest version of LG’s webOS smart platform powers these TVs.
LG is yet to confirm pricing for its Signature OLED TV W yet but it goes without saying that the flagship model will be very pricey (~$8000 for the 65″?) and available in March 2017. The company will also confirm pricing for the more affordable models in the 2017 lineup soon. These TVs should be available for demos in select retailers such as Best Buy, but we may want to call in advance to ensure availability before heading out — it’s totally worth seeing them.
