It has become evident over the past couple of years that Chromebooks are increasingly becoming popular in the notebook market and if you were wondering just how popular they are, consider the fact that they’ve outsold Macs for the very first time in the United States. This was confirmed by IDC, it revealed that Chromebooks have crossed Mac OS devices in terms of shipments for the first time in the first quarter of 2016.
According to estimates by the IDC, Apple shipped some 1.76 million Mac devices across the globe in Q1 2016, whereas nearly two million Chromebooks were shipped by Lenovo, HP and Dell combined.
Chromebooks are largely popular in U.S. schools and rising demand in schools is driving growth for these Chrome OS powered devices. They’re cheap because they have mid-range specifications and a cloud-based OS which enable the notebooks to be snappy and productive.
The data doesn’t reveal just how well the Chromebooks are performing against the Macs across the globe, but as far as the United States goes, Chromebooks have crossed Macs for the first time.
On the other hand, PC shipments remain in an overall decline, a fact that’s certainly going to bother Microsoft. However, IDC expects that there will be a “modest rebound” in PC shipments over the coming months as some large IT buyers will consider purchasing Windows 10-powered machines.
