In-display fingerprint sensors have become mainstream these days, which we suppose can’t be helped as companies are moving towards creating smartphones with edge-to-edge displays. However, in the past, we found that compared to regular capacitive fingerprint sensors, in-display sensors were a tad slower.

Qualcomm is hoping to change that because at CES 2021, the company has since announced its next-gen in-display fingerprint sensor in the form of the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2. Qualcomm is no stranger when it comes to such technology as the company was one of the earlier companies to debut in-display sensors, but it’s good to see that they aren’t resting on their laurels and have worked on improving on it.

With the second-gen technology, Qualcomm is claiming that it will be 50% faster compared to its predecessor, and will also feature a 77% larger surface area, meaning that it will be more forgiving in terms of finger placement. The larger surface area also means that it can capture 1.7x more biometric data, and the sensor itself measures 0.2mm thin which means that smartphone makers can still maintain a slim form factor.

The Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 is expected to debut in early 2021, with speculation that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S21 could be one of the first handsets to take advantage of it.
