Yesterday, Valve announced the Steam Deck. For those unfamiliar, this is essentially a handheld PC that will let you play your Steam games while on the go, but it turns out that maybe not all games are necessarily compatible with it. This is largely due to the fact that the Steam Deck is powered by Linux.
This means that in terms of compatibility, you could run into some issues there. Valve has included software called Proton that helps make porting games to Linux easier, but as Kotaku notes, it isn’t always 100%. So far, it seems that there are four major titles that have issues being played on the Steam Deck.
This includes Destiny 2, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Apparently it seems that the anti-cheat function built into those games don’t play nicely with Proton. Valve notes that they are working on improving Proton so hopefully it will be solved ahead of the console’s release.
The Steam Deck is expected to be released by the end of the year and is priced at $399. It sounds like a very interesting device, although how well it will play in real life remains to be seen, but if you’re keen on the idea of being able to play your Steam games on the go, then this could be the gadget for you.
