With every iOS and macOS update, it feels like Apple is one step closer to marrying the two operating systems, resulting in a series of devices that blend together the technology of the iPhones and Mac computers. With the launch of the M1 chipset, a chipset that’s based on the A-series found in the iPhone and iPad, it certainly feels that way.This has led to some speculating that this could be Apple getting ready to launch touchscreen-based Mac computers, but according to Apple’s SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi, that’s far from the truth.
Speaking to The Independent in an interview, Federighi was quoted as saying, “I gotta tell you when we released Big Sur, and these articles started coming out saying, ‘Oh my God, look, Apple is preparing for touch’. I was thinking like, ‘Whoa, why?’ We had designed and evolved the look for macOS in a way that felt most comfortable and natural to us, not remotely considering something about touch.”
For years, many have been speculating that Apple could eventually introduce a touchscreen Mac computer. After all, we’ve seen various Windows PC and laptop manufacturers head down that path, so it’s not entirely out of the question, but if Federighi’s statement is anything to go by, don’t expect to see a touchscreen Mac computer anytime soon, if at all.
