A couple of years ago, Apple got into hot water when it was discovered that the company was secretly throttling the processors on its iPhones. The company claimed that this was done to help manage the performance on older devices, where due to degrading batteries, it would result in unexpected shutdowns, which is why they introduced processor throttling.

This would help prevent the shutdowns at the expense of performance. If you thought that Apple’s newer iPhones would be immune to this problem, think again because according to an Apple support document, come iOS 13.1, Apple will be introducing processor throttling to its 2018 iPhones – the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.

Note that this does not mean that your performance will be degraded immediately. Rather, this means that the feature will be there and will be monitoring how your phone performs, and only if it detects an issue that the throttling will be applied. According to Apple, “This feature is enabled only after an unexpected shutdown first occurs on a device with a battery that has diminished ability to deliver maximum instantaneous power.”

However, Apple notes, “The effects of performance management on these newer models may be less noticeable due to their more advanced hardware and software design.” That being said, unless your battery has been severely degraded, there’s a good chance that you might not encounter any issues anytime soon.
